The Death Cafe, or Death Cafes, is a safe space for casual conversations about death, often held in churches, coffee shops, and historic cemeteries across the country. These informal, unstructured discussions about mortality are often held at these cafes, often advertised on Facebook or through social media. The group of strangers, some friends, and some strangers gathered to discuss death over tea and vegan strawberry cookies. Participants often mentioned harrowing near-death experiences and their motivation to live life with more vigor. Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz and ethnologist Bernard Creattaz are credited with organizing the first Death Cafe in 2004. The cafes, which focus on informal discussions of mortality, are also known as 'death cafes' by Rosemary Kimble, a death doula who provides holistic support during the dying process.
