A study by scientists from across Europe and the U.S suggests that the "classical view" of genetics, the original work of Austro-Hungarian biologist Gregor Mendel, has been wrong for over a century. The study argues that Mendelism alone cannot explain genetic variation across a population, nor can explain why certain genomes produce certain phenotypes. The research also advocates for the adoption of polygenicity, the idea that multiple genes can affect a phenotypic trait or disease. The researchers, who call for a broader view of the genetic landscape, believe that Mendellism's approach reveals only a partial insight into the generation of the phenotype.
