The "Focus Las Vegas" symposium was held to discuss the long-running healthcare staffing shortage in Southern Nevada, with discussion focusing on training more doctors and mental health professionals. The Lincy Institute at UNLV reports that Nevada is missing about 30 percent of its healthcare jobs due to a lack of residency spots and that many newly trained doctors are leaving the state for other states. The issue was highlighted at the state legislature last year after nurses reported that they were struggling with caring for up to 10 patients at once and pushed for mandatory staffing ratios.
