The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has initiated a new initiative to crack down on 'birth tourism schemes' across the country, aiming to identify networks that assist pregnant foreign nationals in the US to give birth to their US-born babies. The move follows President Trump's aggressive push to reduce both legal and illegal immigration after he took office in 2025. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed it is aware of some networks facilitating travel to the US for birth tourism. The White House has accused birth tourism of posing a cost to taxpayers and threatening national security. No laws directly bars birth tourism, but a federal regulation implemented in 2020 during Trump's first term prohibits using temporary tourist and business visas for the primary purpose of obtaining US citizenship for a newborn. The Center for Immigration Studies estimated that between 20,000-25,000 mothers came to the United States for birth-tourist purposes in 2020.
