Travelers profit rises on stronger underwriting, lower catastrophe losses

Travelers reported a profit of $1.7 billion, or $7.71 per share, in the first quarter of 2026, compared to $443 million a year earlier. The company's underwriting gain was $1.,17 billion, compared with an underwriting loss of $305 million the previous year. Additionally, lower catastrophe losses were recorded, resulting in a 9% increase in net investment income to $833 million. Travelers also returned more than $2.2 billion of excess capital to shareholders during the quarter, largely due to its strong balance sheet and diversified investment portfolio.
