A recent audit in Nigeria identified Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé as major contributors of plastic packaging waste. The audit, conducted by Break Free from Plastic and Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, found that multinational beverage companies and single-use plastic producers were the largest sources of plastic pollution. While sachet packaging dominated the waste stream, plastic bottles were the third-most prevalent plastic waste. This is not just Nigeria's plastic crisis but also globally, as microplastics are found in nearly 80% of human blood samples. Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, has banned single-used plastics and federal officials are working on policy measures to handle plastic waste, with the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management being updated by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
