The Department of Energy (DoE) has extended its 90-day order to keep a broken Colorado coal plant, Craig Unit 1, despite generating no electricity and costing ratepayers tens of millions of dollars. The DoE cites "reliability" concerns in its illegal orders to keep these coal plants open, despite coal being the least reliable form of energy available in the US. Coal is costly both from an energy and health perspective, contributing to tens of billions in health costs per year to communities surrounding the plants. Despite this, the plant's owners had deferred maintenance since 2016 and planned to retire by 2025. The Department of Education has been subject to lawsuits from public interest groups like the Environmental Defense Fund and Sierra Club against this move.
