This utility watchdog warns bills might keep rising

California's utilities, which have the second-highest electricity rates in the nation, are seeking permission from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPC) to raise their rates, according to director of the Public Advocates Office, Linda Serizawa. She found that three of California's investor-owned utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas and Electric, are waiting for approval for $7.3 billion in wildfire-related costs to be added to their rates and have yet to submit another $2 billion in costs that they haven't yet submitted to regulators. These costs are part of a three-bucket list that includes costs already in rates, already authorized to be included in rates. The utilities also control the timing of when they will come forward with cost recovery requests, which they have allowed since 2019.
