United Airlines has introduced a three-tier plan that reduces the price of some first- and business-class seats, but at a cost. The airline will offer a lower base fare for a lie-flat seat and meal in the United Polaris and Premium Plus cabins on transcontinental and international flights, as well as some routes to Hawaii. However, passengers will not be eligible for upgrades or access to the six United Polaris airport lounges for long-haul customers. The new plan includes one checked bag and one carry-on, while standard fares include free checked bags and a flexible refund policy. The basic-economy approach to the priciest real estate on an aircraft may appeal to budget and infrequent flyers seeking an in-flight experience.
