Community advocates from the northeast Oklahoma City metro are calling for more investment in violence intervention programs following a mass shooting at Arcadia Lake on May 3. The event, which left one person dead and nearly two dozen injured, has been called a "wake-up call" for local officials to invest in such programs. The leaders with LiveFree Oklahoma, a community-based violence intervention program founded by rapper and activist Jabee, called for better support services that could prevent tragedies like the recent shooting. The state's gun death rate increased by 27% from 2014 to 2023, according to a report from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In addition, firearms were the leading cause of death among young Oklahomans in 2023.
