A study by Sapien Labs has found that young people are performing better in countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania than in the U.S. The study compared "mind health" to a scale of -100 (distressed) to 200 (thriving), with 18-to 34-year-olds in Ghana scoring 69, while young Americans scored 36. The top five countries for young people's mind health were Ghana, N. Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. The research also revealed that there are less connected bonds within family in the US, with less than half of 18- to 34-olds talking to their parents a few times a week compared to over 13 in the United States. The researchers suggest that policymakers and parents can improve their ability to function. They also suggest that phone bans in schools should be a good place to start, as many states have enacted full or partial bell-to-bell phone bans.
