The war in Iran didn’t end; it became something new

The US-Israeli bombing campaign may have made a nuclear deal more likely, but not in the way promised. This is now a negotiation about Iran’s nuclear program and future control of the Strait of Hormuz. Despite President Donald Trump's claims that Iran has agreed to all US conditions and that talks are going well, Iran has declared the strait reopening after briefly reopening it. The US continues to maintain a partial blockade on Iranian ports. The potential for Iran to impose tolls on ships exiting the straits is unacceptable for both the US and its trading partners. However, Iran's claim to control the straiting challenges the principles of free navigation and its attempts to take control of it can also be seen as a challenge. The question now arises over whether Iran will abandon its nuclear program without receiving anything in return.
