Fiji split with coach Byrne over 'new direction'

Fiji's rugby coach, Mick Byrne, has resigned immediately following a disagreement over a "new direction" for the team. Byrne, who took over in 2024, had previously successfully coached the Fijian Drua side in their first three seasons in Super Rugby Pacific. The Fiji Rugby Union announced that it was in the best interests of Fiji and that Byrne's departure would leave the team 18 months out of the World Cup. Senirusi Seruvakula, who has coached the Fiji women's team since 2020, will be acting coach while Byrne's successor is identified.
