Minnesota lawmakers are moving forward with a bipartisan plan to strengthen the state's Medicaid fraud enforcement, the Medical Assistance Protection Act (MAP Act), which would significantly expand the Minnesota Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) by adding 18 staff members, including 11 investigators, three attorneys, and four support staff. The bill also gives the Attorney General direct subpoena power for financial records, which supporters argue will speed up investigations and reduce unnecessary county attorneys' need to go through county attorneys. The move comes after the federal government deferred millions of dollars in Medicaid funding to the state due to fraud concerns. Despite this, Representative Matt Norris (DFL-Blaine) has also proposed a bipartisan bill to create a state Office of the Inspector General and supports a larger package of human services program‑integrity bills still awaiting action.
