Rare Form of Dementia Causes Man to Fall in Love With One Sound
Published on March 3, 2026.
A rare form of dementia, frontotemporal dementia, has caused a 68-year-old man to develop a fascination with a specific type of noise. This finding suggests that these changes in preferences for sounds may be a key feature of the syndrome. Dementia is an umbrella term to describe cognitive problems that affect everyday life. The most common form of the disease is Alzheimer's disease, which is characterized by memory loss and cognitive changes. Frontotem temporal dementia affects brain regions in the frontal and temporal lobes, which are involved in a wide range of functions such as personality, behaviour, problem solving, planning, language, processing, and understanding sounds. However, there is still debate within the research community about how to define this type of dementia.
