Lawyer and activist, Herb Ely, who served as vice president of the local NAACP and led a number of major civil rights cases, was awarded the 2012 ASU Martin Luther King Servant Leadership Award. He was instrumental in helping minorities break down civil rights barriers in the 1960s and later in the 1990s.
