Utah sexual assault rates rise above national average as advocates mark awareness month

As Utah marked Sexual Assault Awareness Month, advocates and state leaders warned that the state's rape rate is above the national average. The Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Salt Lake City hosted "Denim Day," an event honoring individuals and organizations involved in the movement to end sexual violence and raise awareness of sexual assault. The day was created after a ruling from the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction based on the victim's tight jeans, leading to the creation of “denim Day” to protest victim-blaming and support survivors. Utah Rep. Angela Romero, D-House District 25, Salt Lake County, highlighted the need for more prevention and resources. She also advocated for more funding specifically aimed at sexual assault prevention and services.
