State initiatives will fuel an already fiery November election in California

The November California elections are set to be a significant election year, with no clear front-runner in the governor’s race and a potential for two Republicans to take the top two primary slots and head to the general election. The November congressional midterms will also be a referendum on President Donald Trump's second term. However, there are also serious nonpartisan initiatives, including a union effort to impose a one-time wealth tax on California's billionaires. The first initiative, sponsored by the California Chamber of Commerce, aims to reform the California Environmental Quality Act, which has been criticized by many Democrats as it unnecessarily delays projects or adds costs and delays. Two other initiatives, supported by both Democrats and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, aim to limit transfer fees on property sales and overturn the Los Angeles’mansion tax, which imposes 4% fees on $5.10.6 million above $10.5% on all commercial properties.
