Former Special Counsel Jack Smith sought nearly two years worth of Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel’s phone records, according to new documents. The records, which did not include the content of the calls and text messages, were subpoenaed from October 1, 2020, to February 22, 2023, and January 1, 2021, to November 23, 2022. Two subpoenas were signed by United States Magistrate Judge James Mazzone and U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Beryl Howell, an Obama appointee. The documents were released by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley ahead of a hearing. Other records reveal a January 2023 list of members of Congress Smith's team hoped to subpoena, including now-Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, former Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, and Republican Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar.
