A Florida apartment complex has declared 85 units unsafe due to structural issues, with no timetable for when tenants will return. The problems were largely caused by staircases that had rusted or became detached from their buildings. One building caught fire, and workers were trying to patch over the damage instead of addressing the structural issues caused by the fire. A second building was evacuated after it was discovered that the walls were compressing, leading to the interior collapsing in on itself. A report by engineers is being compiled to assess the damage and the repairs, which will be available to the complex's managers Thursday morning. The property's managers, The Sabet Group, did not respond to questions about the length of the issues.
