Over 11,000 law enforcement officers from across the globe have signed a petition urging a Bronx judge not to jail Sgt. Erik Duran for manslaughter in the 2023 death of 30-year-old Eric Duprey. The petition asks for a "nonincarceration sentence" for Duran, who was convicted of killing Duprey by hurling a cooler at him. Duprey was fleeing a drug bust when Duran lifted the cooler with ice and drinks and used both hands to throw it at him, causing Duprey to fall off the scooter and hit his head on the curb. In the petition, officers argue that Duran shouldn't be punished for making a split-second decision that cops are forced to make every day.
