Two fugitives, 44-year-old Joseph McDowell and 42-year old Cassondra Sauber, were found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds following an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in Deming, New Mexico, on April 23. The incident occurred as USMS members were attempting to apprehend two fugitives who were wanted on various nationwide extradition warrants for child sex crimes. As deputies approached the residence, McDowell armed himself with a rifle and barricaded himself inside as deputies breached the door. No officers or deputies were injured during the incident. The New Mexico State Police is investigating the incident and will share its findings with the district attorney for review.
