The impending layoffs at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center in San Antonio have raised concerns about the future of mental health care in the city. The company's management informed staff that 648 employees would be laid off, effective June 26. The facility, which offers inpatient and outpatient treatment for mental health and drug and alcohol problems, was previously banned from treating patients using Medicare or Medicaid due to failing to meet patient health and safety requirements. The Center for Health Care Services president and CEO, Jelynne LeBlanc Jamison, said that due to this issue, there will be a total of 450 fewer beds available for people who need mental health treatment. It is unclear how the facility will continue operating with a smaller staff.
