Utah State football coach Bronco Mendenhall has stated that the strongest position on the team is quarterback, despite losing star quarterback Bryson Barnes after the 2025 season. The biggest addition to the quarterback room recently was former BYU backup McCae Hillstead, who recently entered the transfer portal and committed to BYU. Hillstead is considered the early favorite to take the starting position in the fall. In addition to Hillstead's addition, Utah State has added Grady Brosterhous, a transfer from Virginia, and true freshmen Kaleb Maryland, Brady Goodman, and Crew Cacciacarne. Mendhenall praised the strength of the team's quarterback room and its succession plan. He also highlighted the camaraderie, execution, and program development, as well as the progress made.
