The Guttmacher Institute has revealed that nearly 1 in 4 women who crossed state lines for abortions in 2025 came to Illinois, making it the largest receiving state for the third consecutive year. The number of women traveling for abortions has increased since federal abortion rights ended in 2022. The Chicago Abortion Fund, the largest fund of its kind in the country, supports women intending to access abortion in Illinois and elsewhere. It also covers transportation costs for those living outside the state. Local advocates are not worried about keeping up with demand, but are grateful to be in a state that creates it. The Guttmaacher Institute also revealed that Illinois could become a geographical island of expanded abortion access surrounded by more conservative states. The state's ability to provide abortion access has been challenged by Eric Scheidler, the executive director of the Pro-Life Action League, who argues that the idea of abortion tourism tourism is not just anti-abortion advocates, but by focusing on the state's needs.
