A federal judge in Tyler dismissed a lawsuit that sought to allow churches to endorse political candidates without losing their tax-exempt status. The lawsuit was brought by several Texas churches and national Christian groups who argued that their religious beliefs compelled them to speak to their congregations about electoral politics. The Department of Justice had previously sought to dismiss the case, but the Trump administration revived it and sided with the plaintiffs. The judge dismissed the proposed consent judgement, citing federal laws preventing judges from blocking taxation that hasn't yet occurred.
