California auditors have rejected Gavin Newsom's plan to invest millions into a youth volunteer program, stating that the governor failed to adequately explain why such a campaign is needed during a budget crisis. The California Legislative Analyst's Office highlighted a $5 million general fund proposed for the program, which would be overseen by the Governor’s Office of Service and Community Engagement (GO-Serve). The goal is to help Californians develop an "improved sense of belonging" and to address declining employment and worsening mental health among young men. Auditors also highlighted concerns about oversight, coordination and long-term effectiveness of these efforts.
