These 'Free Refrigerators' In Newark Are Easing Hunger Across The City

The United Community Corporation (UCC) in Newark has introduced its newest "community refrigerator" that is free to anyone who can't afford groceries or lack access to reliable and affordable transportation. The refrigerators are available at no cost and have been used more than 22,500 times last year. The program is particularly effective in areas designated as "food deserts" by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. The UCC currently operates refrigerators in Newark's central, east, south and west wards, with an additional location in Maplewood. The nonprofit also manages and operates a food pantry and a food truck.
