A California restaurant has been fined for serving the dish "Stinky Tofu," a staple of Taiwanese street food, after a neighbor's complaints led to the city labeling it a public nuisance and threatening fines. The restaurant halted sales from 2017 to 2025, but the demand remained high despite the ban. Despite this, the restaurant returned the dish, serving it only once a week. The owner, David Liao, said upgrades to mitigate the smell could cost $20,000 to $100,000 without a guarantee from the city.
