Peruvian ex-mayoral candidate Rafael López Aliaga has accused Peru's National Jury of Elections (JNE) of fraud, alleging that logistical failures prevented roughly 608,000 Lima voters from casting ballots and costing him 120,000 votes. The BVL general index dropped 4.16% by midday, the MSCI Peru index dropped 6.3%, and the Peruvian sol fell 1.4% against the dollar to S/3.44. Left-wing Castillista Roberto Sánchez took second place with 92.1% of the count, making the June 7 runoff the most market-threatening scenario Peruvian investors have faced since 2021. The crisis also led to a criminal complaint against Lópe Aliaga for inciting insurgency. Peru's prosecutor general Tomás Gálvez denied the fraud allegations and asked the JNE to declare the elections null.
