Novelist Noah Wyle has spoken about his connection to the season two finale of HBO Max's The Pitt, where he played Dr. Jack Abbot and Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, about their respective mental health struggles. The topic of suicide was first mentioned in the series’ first episode as Robby finds Abbot on the roof and jokes that jumping on his shift would be “rude” for Abbot. Wyle says that this episode was influenced by the American College of Emergency Physicians' report that roughly 300 to 400 physicians a year die by suicide and the American Medical Association's warning that doctors are at a higher risk of suicide and suicidal ideation than the general population. Wylle credits his exploration of Robby's dark mental health journey to "responsible storytelling" and highlighting the isolation of leadership positions.
