Gang member convicted of killing off-duty LAPD officer in 2019

Cristian Facundo, a reputed gang member, has been convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting off-duty Los Angeles police officer, Officer Juan Jose Diaz, 24, in 2019. This was part of a 90-minute crime spree that included shooting into an occupied motor vehicle and vandalism. Facundo is facing life imprisonment without parole. A co-defendant, Francisco Talamantes, pleaded guilty in 2021 to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and other charges and was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison. Diaz was shot outside a taco stand with his girlfriend and her two brothers. The shooting was recorded on surveillance video.
