Spain has reversed a massive influx of illegal immigrants into a Spanish enclave in North Africa, with most of the more than 50,000 who had crossed the border voluntarily returning. The Spanish government's representative in Ceuta reported that 57 bodies have been recovered on the Spanish side of the border and that there may be additional casualties on the Moroccan side. Spain's Interior Ministry said around 50,00 people had crossed since Thursday morning and 48,300 had returned by 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Friday. Italy is suspending the European Union's border-free Schengen arrangements with Spain, a measure set to affect people travelling by plane or boat between the two countries. The incident caused division in Europe, with leaders of fellow EU states urging Spain to contain the situation. Right-wing parties blamed Spain's lax migration policies for the surge in migrants.
