Election campaign deepens Congo's generational divide

The presidential election in Congo-Brazzaville has sparked tensions between the generations, with current president Denis Sassou NGuesso running for a fifth term. Villagers in Mayitoukou, which lies just 30-odd kilometres from the capital Brazzavile, have been told to vote for Sassou, despite 80-year-old village chief Joseph Batangouna's insistence otherwise. Batangaouna, who served under Sassou who won the 1997 civil war, believes only the current president can keep the peace in the country. However, not all local people feel the same about voting. Some argue that the current leader has no competition and that there will be no need for a second round of voting.
