Police Chief Announces Retirement From Howard County P.D.

Howard County Police Chief Robert Der has announced his retirement from the position he held for four and a half years. Der was appointed as police chief in November 2021 and took over from Jan. 1, 2022. Prior to his departure, Der served as the Chief Deputy, Maryland State Fire Marshal and oversaw the progression and resolution of statewide fire, arson and explosive investigations. He also oversaw preparation of the agency's annual budget for legislative approval. Der's retirement was not caused by recent incidents but was planned for some time.
