The case before the Supreme Court regarding Watson v. Republican National Committee involves a Mississippi law that allows ballots postmarked by Election Day to be received and counted. Opponents argue this violates a federal law that requires all states to hold congressional and president elections on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. However, this does not mean Mississippi’s law conflicts with the federal law or the Constitution. Some states have compelling reasons to extend this grace period, but some argue that states with geographic challenges could send out ballots earlier due to weather conditions. However a ruling against this could overturn election conspiracy theories.
