Jory Thomas, a 14-year-old Montana boy, used his rodeo lasso to rescue a drowning victim in the Yellowstone River on July 5. Thomas was camping with his family near Greycliff when he heard someone calling for help across the river. He quickly discovered that a floating raft and a paddleboard had hit a bridge pillar, throwing four people into the water. All four made it to shore, but the man was drifting downstream while clinging to a cooler. Thomas managed to pull him ashore until first responders arrived. For his heroic rescue, Thomas was awarded a Certificate of Achievement by the Sweet Grass County Sheriff’s Office.
