A new federal education opportunity is set to be implemented in 2027, allowing taxpayers to claim a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations that support K-12 students. The scholarships can be used for tuition, tutoring, special needs services, transportation and educational technology. States must choose to opt in, and states must notify the IRS that their state will participate. The decision for Maryland rests with Gov. Wes Moore. The program aims to expand educational opportunity for families whose children struggle in traditional settings. Critics worry that it may distract from strengthening public schools. If Maryland declines, these opportunities will exist elsewhere.
