East Bay City OKs Ban On Data Centers: Report

The Oakley City Council has unanimously voted to impose a 45-day moratorium on accepting, processing, or approving land use applications tied to data centers. This makes the city the first Bay Area city to take such action. The moratorium will allow staff to study data centers' impact on electricity and water systems, gather public input, and draft zoning rules. Currently, the city's municipal code includes data centers but does not define, classify, or regulate them. City Attorney Derek Cole warned that without clear standards, officials would be forced to evaluate projects case by case. The temporary moratorium can be extended twice. The vote follows tension over the development of the Bridgehead Industrial Project, which initially included data centers, which was initially planned to include one, but was withdrawn after residents raised concerns about environmental and health impacts.
