Alexi Giannoulias, a Democrat, is currently finishing his first four-year term as the Illinois Secretary of State, after being elected the youngest state treasurer in the country in 2006 at age 30. He oversees the state's largest office in the US with over 4,000 employees and 25 departments. Giannioulias has been working to transform and modernize the office's outdated and aging technology, making it more secure and efficient, and enabling Illinoisans to obtain more services online. He also eliminated the “Time Tax” or the amount of time they spend waiting in lines or filling out forms to obtain government services. His “Skip-the-Line” program has reduced wait times at the state’s busiest DMV facilities and cross-trained employees to increase efficiencies. Diane Harris, a conservative republican, is running for the position, offering to offer services faster, fairer, and more accessible to all Illinoisans. Her Republican opponent, Walter Adamczyk, proposes giving driver's licenses or state IDs to homeless veterans for free. His campaign promises to reduce fees for seniors, veterans, and reduce traffic delays and clean up the voter rolls.
