Puffin season is on the Oregon coast, with the 2026 Welcome the Puffins Celebration set to take place at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. The event, which is free and open to the public, will also allow for public observation of the birds. It will also feature a Tufted Puffin activity table and an interactive Tufting Puffen Predator Game. However, tufted puffins have been decreasing from Oregon's shores at a rapid rate, dropping from nearly 5,000 in 1998 to only 553 in 2021. The decline is likely due to factors such as warming ocean temperatures, reduced fish populations, pollution and an increase in tannish behaviour.
