The Yukon River is Alaska's largest river, with a 120-mile stretch from Tanana to Ruby that features a few log cabins separated by many miles of frozen river. This section of the river is the most accessible, dependent on a packed trail, which Hudson Stuck noted was the greatest gift one northern traveler can give another. The journey was made by Ed Norton and Forest Wagner, who pedaled to Tanana via a new road from Manley Hot Springs. The area is also known for its dog teams that used to harvest king and chum salmon, but salmon numbers have declined due to the largest natural-history change in recent times in Alaska. The author reflects on the loss of these runs of swimming protein and soil nutrients.
