The head of the Global Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), Sania Nishtar, has warned that aid cuts by the United States and other donors have forced Gavi to cut its malaria programme in Africa, threatening tens of thousands of children's lives. The organisation, which brings together government and private donors to help developing countries acquire jabs for key diseases at affordable prices, has been reduced to 70% of its malaria coverage goal from 85% to 85% by 2030. The impact of these cuts is expected to be significant for children's health, with final spending decisions still dependent on African governments. Nishtar also highlighted challenges in Gavi's effort to develop vaccine manufacturing in Africa. Despite these challenges, she remains hopeful of a renewed partnership with the US, citing financial challenges as a silver lining.
