Senate GOP moves on Save America Act, the likely doomed voter ID bill Trump wants above all else

The Senate Republicans have advanced the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a bill that would require photo ID and proof of citizenship for federal elections. Despite defections from some in their party and opposition from Democrats, the bill passed in a 51-48 vote. All Democrats and one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, voted against a motion to debate the bill. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune's move to open debate on the measure succeeded, its support remains below the 60-vote threshold needed for final passage. The act also includes provisions to force states to remove noncitizens from voting rolls, which Democrats claim could disenfranchise registered voters.
