China has unveiled a new hypersonic missile, the Changjian-1000, or CJ-1000. The missile reportedly can travel over 3,500 miles, which is enough to reach American shores. It is part of a vast arsenal of missiles from the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF). The CJ-1 is powered by a scramjet engine and can reach speeds of over Mach 6, or six times the speed of sound. However, the U.S. has struggled to produce a working hypersonian weapon for many years, not for a lack of trying or spending. The Congressional Budget Office revealed that the Defense Department had spent over $8 billion on hypersonics programs since 2019. However this has not been resolved, with a new attempt, the Dark Eagle. Despite its shorter maximum range of 1,725 miles, it moves at a comparable speed of overMach 5.
