St. Paul's answer to gun violence: Prioritize solving every shooting, not just murders

St. Paul police have initiated the Non-Fatal Shooting Unit, a unit that focuses on non-fatal shootings, in order to reduce gun violence across the city. The unit, which is the only unit of its kind in Minnesota cities currently, has been successful in solving more cases and reducing homicides. Commander Nikki Peterson believes focusing on these crimes will reduce retaliation and increase homicide numbers. The department has reported 107 victims in 2025, with officers solving 71% of cases. The Ramsey County Undersheriff's Office has also provided victim and witness support, helping to increase cooperation in several cases.
