The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (AL) is celebrating its 100th birthday with the City of Des Moines declaring March 30 as "Animal Rescue". The AL is now the largest nonprofit animal shelter in the state and provides care for over 13,000 animals each year. The organization was founded in 1926 and began operating its first shelter in 1927.
