In Des Moines, the trend of social running is gaining popularity, particularly among people in their 20s and 30s, driven by young people seeking healthier, more analog social experiences. Michael Zimmerman, owner of RipRoar, sees this shift in focus on social connection rather than training goals. The Des Moines Girl 5K and the Des Moines Women's Half Marathon have both sold out for the first time in a decade, with 1,250 participants, up 75% from last year, and the biggest growth among women ages 18–24. Triathlete Val Ruby started Gratitude Running in 2023 after losing the joy of solo training hours. Neek Robinson, 27, co-founded 515 Run Club with a few friends, which now draws 130-200 people.
