A group of Cleveland women founded the Journey Center for Safety and Healing in the early 1970s, a shelter for women fleeing an abusive partner. The women, who opened their homes and provided transportation, created safe spaces that did not yet have a name. The shelter opened at the time, when it was only the third domestic violence shelter in the US. Today, Journey Center serves over 12,000 domestic violence survivors and their families annually, providing free services. The need for domestic violence protection has increased since last year, with nearly half of every domestic violence survivor turned away due to lack of resources. Anne Face, CEO of the organization, urges readers to support it and ensure it survives.
