Volkswagen in talks to become missile defense manufacturer — but not for Germany

Volkswagen, a German auto manufacturer, is reportedly in talks to become a missile defense manufacturer for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. The company has been discussing a transition for its Osnabrück, Germany, factory for a year and is now being sought by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, a state-owned Israeli defense group. The deal would represent a historical 180-degree turn for Volkswagen, which was founded by Adolf Hitler's Nazi government in 1937. Since March 2025, manufacturers have been interested in the Osnaberük factory, a 4.6 million-square-foot facility with 2,300 employees, since it started its vehicle production in 2011. However, Volkswagen has since continued discussions with defense companies.
